How to buy the perfect suit
28 Sep 2018
Ever wondered how to find the perfect suit that will last a lifetime? We spoke with Master Tailor Milap Gohel from our very own Knightsman Bespoke Tailors to hear all about his top buying tips and the number one style mistake you can easily avoid.
It’s no secret that Milap Gohel is The King of suits and tailoring in Adelaide. Growing up in a family of tailors, he was immersed in the industry from a young age while helping around his parents’ shop in India.
Fast-forward 30 years, Milap and and his business partner Mayank are now the proud owners of Knightsman Bespoke Tailors on the Lower Ground Level at Adelaide Central Plaza.
With over 12,000 fabrics available from across the globe, Knightsman is the complete bespoke tailoring experience, as well as offering made to measure and ready-to-wear garments crafted with the same superior construction.
“There’s no shopping experience more personal than having something crafted for you and you alone. We genuinely care about making people look and feel their best. We really do have exactly what you are looking for. Best of all, it actually fits,” says Milap.
So, what are this Master Tailor’s top tips for buying a suit?
One: “Check the tag! Take a look at the fabric content. A sign advertising 'well made' or 'wool suits' can be deceiving. If it says wool, you should make sure it’s actually wool and not mixed with a high plastic content (polyester). Good fabric is made of natural fibres that don’t break or ball easily and feel soft and smooth.”
Two: “Name brands and European-made suits aren’t always higher quality, but you often pay more for them. The origin of the fabric used and the tailor who constructs it are the most important. When checking a suit’s construction, look at the stitching between seams. It should be strong but have a bit of give.”
Three: “The trick to finding a good fit is all in the shoulders. If they’re too big or small, don't buy the suit as it’s very difficult and expensive to adjust later. From there, check that it looks fitted but not so tight there’s unsightly creasing.”
Next, we asked Milap the number one style mistake he sees time and time again:
“Clothes that don’t fit!”
According to Milap, “You could wear the most expensive outfit in the world, but if it doesn't fit you may as well have gone to a hire store. The opposite is true too. There's nothing wrong with going to a second-hand shop or raiding you family’s wardrobe for a hidden gem, but make sure you bring it in to us for adjustments.”
His final piece of advice?
“The best suit for you is the one that fits the best.”
